The YWCA of Black Hawk County offers many varied services that "respond to the priority needs of women and their families" as our mission statement promises.

Quality Time
Quality Time provides parenting education and peer support for parents with children of all ages. The program lets children participate in recreation while parents learn how to improve their parenting skills. A meal is provided. Quality Time includes a life-skills program for adolescents in collaboration with Lutheran Services in Iowa and Pathways. Topics include self-esteem, personal heath and wellness, family relationships, communication skills, decision-making and time management.

G.E.D./A.B.E.
General Equivalency Diploma/Adult Basic Education classes are offered free at the YWCA in coordination with Hawkeye Community College for persons wishing to complete their high school diploma or brush up on basic skills. As many have found, it's never too late to go back to school. Classes are ongoing and no pre-registration is needed. Free child care is provided at the YWCA for children of those enrolled in the program.

Iowa State University Extension Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)

Come and join other young families and get ideas for quick healthy meals, smart snack ideas, dealing with picky eaters and how to make food dollars stretch. Income guidelines apply. For more information call Sarah at ISU Extension, 234-6811.

Stork's Nest
Sponsored by Operation Threshold, this program provides parents with supplies, equipment and services for effective parenting. It is held at the YWCA and child care is provided. Sign up with a case manager at Allen Women's Center, People's Clinic or Covenant High Risk Clinic.

Residence Program

The Residence Program provides transitional housing with wwekly meetings that focus on personal goal setting.

The YWCA has ten residence rooms for adult women (one is handicapped accessible). Rates are currently $225 or $245 per month with a $25 deposit. Kitchen and laundry facilities are available.

The YWCA program provides support and case management to help residents meet their individual goals.

Family Center
YWCA Family Center staff provide excellent child care for young people while parents attend class, activities, or support groups.

Ages: 4 months - pre-school

Hours: Monday - Friday 9 a.m. - noon

Cost: Members: $2 per child

$20 10x ticket

Non-members: $3 per child or $30 10x ticket

Discounts for 2 or more children from the same family.
